Don’t Let Tech Failures Cancel Your Class
A Freelancer’s Guide to Staying Online
As a freelance teacher, trainer, or coach, your computer isn’t just a tool—it’s your classroom, your office, and your livelihood. We’ve all felt that spike of adrenaline when the screen freezes five minutes before a session, or the internet drops in the middle of a workshop.
Do you ever have problems with your computer? I know I do from time to time.
I’m Paul Fisher, and I’ve been building, breaking, and repairing computers since the 80s. Over the years, I’ve seen most technical issues and learned exactly how to resolve them.
If you depend on your own technology for your regular income, you can’t afford downtime. Here is a summary of how to keep your classes running even when things go wrong.
1. First Rule: Don’t Panic
When technology fails, the most important thing is to keep calm and deal with the problem systematically.
The good news? In about 70% of situations, the problem is a “2-minute fix” or a “15-minute task” that you can solve with simple solutions.
● The Golden Rule: If a computer is misbehaving, just restart it—it often works!
● The Checklist: If you need to troubleshoot, follow this order: Power, Cables, Software, Drivers, Hardware.
● Freezing Apps: If your meeting software freezes, press Ctrl+Alt+Del, select Task Manager, highlight the frozen app, and click “End task” to close it.
2. You Need a “Plan B”
If your income stops when your computer stops, you really need a backup plan.
● The Two-Device Strategy: If you usually teach on a desktop, keep an emergency laptop ready (or vice versa).
● Sync Your Data: Ensure your teaching materials are synced between both devices so you can switch instantly.
3. Power Outages Don’t Have to End the Lesson
A power cut doesn’t mean you have to cancel the class. If you have a laptop, you already have a strategy in place.
● Stay Connected: Use your mobile phone as a hotspot to provide an internet signal.
● Stay Charged: If your laptop charges via USB-C, you can use a 10,000mAh power bank to keep the battery topped up.
● The Result: With a phone hotspot and a power bank, you can carry on working for hours.
4. Protect Your Course Material
If you face a complicated repair, like reinstalling Windows, your data could be lost.
● Partitioning: Move your Documents, Downloads, and essential teaching files to a different partition or disk, away from where Windows is stored.
● Backups: Never rely on a single copy; you need a solid backup strategy.
5. Know When to Call a Pro
For the 30% of issues that aren’t quick fixes, you have two options. You can learn to handle software and driver issues yourself, but for hardware problems, you likely need help.
● Line Up Support: I suggest you always have a reliable specialist lined up, just in case.
● Diagnostics: Professionals have advanced equipment to check for failed components.
